The right motivation: Don't work with nearshore development to save money 💰, after all, the financial gain is limited. Good people have their education, price and ambition, also in Portugal. Price is not our motivation, availability of top talent: that is the motivation.
Cultural fit: Build a team with the same work ethic as your local team. Don't look for people for the short term, but for the long term. Also, don't expect them to know everything from day one and give them the same capabilities as your local team.
Language proficiency: In Belgium and Portugal we have completely switched to English. It is not the native language for both teams, so make sure that both sides can speak English sufficiently. Good English skills are therefore the first criterion after the technical ones.
Face-to-face interaction: We have daily virtual contact. In addition to the virtual, regular real-life contact is also really crucial. People work with people, not Teams sessions. Again: the cost of this is not important, you will earn it back more than once. The frequency is at least 1 time per quarter.
One team: Someone once said: "Isn't that a task for the Portuguese?" This kind of comment is unacceptable for our team. We are all one team and work together to achieve assignments, across national borders. The right competence in the right project: that's what counts.
